A groundbreaking ceremony was held on the site of the future Zvago Lake Superior cooperative housing complex Wednesday morning.
The 51-unit, four-story cooperative overlooks Lake Superior at 3900 London Road, Duluth situated next to Ecumen Lakeshore. It is a consumer-focused community for active adults 62 years and older.
Currently, Zvago is 78 percent pre-sold. Some of the residents that have pre-purchased units participated in the groundbreaking and soil-melding ceremony Wednesday. The soil-melding ceremony offered incoming residents the opportunity to add soil from their current homes to the broken ground of their future home.
“Honestly, if you bring it down to the exact square footages it’s about 5,000 square feet or so of interior community space and there’s about 5,000 square feet of exterior community space with a plaza overlooking beautiful lake superior,” described Tim Nichols, the President of Lifestyle Communities.
Development of the complex is being run by OneTwoOne Development, a partnership between Ecumen and Lifestyle Communities.
“Ecumen has a long commitment to the Duluth community with Lake Shore next door, Lakeland Shores affordable housing and this is a nice piece that really rounds out what we’re offering for the more active senior here in Duluth, and there is a large demand,” said the Chief Business Development Officer for Ecumen Julie Murray.
Residents will purchase the units similar to a home, but can choose to pay a percentage of the cost in monthly charges much like paying rent on an apartment.
Zvago Lake Superior is expected to be completed after 13 months of construction, which began in August 2019, and is set to open in September 2020.
